Canada’s North, struggles with the impacts of substance abuse and addiction are far-reaching. High rates of unemployment, isolation and for many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, the inter-generational impacts of colonization, residential schools and abuses have contributed to substance abuse and addictions problems. Some communities have already developed effective responses. There is a common need across Canada's North for the development of holistic, community-based, and culturally inclusive approaches to the identification, prevention and treatment of substance abuse and addictions.
