Overview
Canada's correctional system is two-tiered, consisting of federal offenders-those serving sentences of two years or more in federal penitentiaries-and those under provincial/territorial jurisdiction, who serve sentences of less than two years. Canada's incarceration rate is low relative to the United States, but high compared with many European countries, Australia, and New Zealand.
