Q&A...

Are there laws governing liquor advertising?
Absolutely! The Liquor Act prohibits anyone from advertising a specific brand name or drink price in the newspaper, flyers, posters, event programs, radio, TV, etc. - in fact anywhere outside a liquor establishment. These laws apply only to ads that originate in the Yukon - ads seen in magazines and newspapers or on television originating outside the Yukon are subject to the laws of the particular jurisdiction where they originate. All jurisdictions, including Yukon, specify that advertising may not promote the consumption of liquor and must not imply that consumption enhances social acceptance, personal success, enjoyment of any activity or will resolve their personal problems.

So how can I let people know that my club is holding an event where liquor will be available?
There are terms and phrases you can use in advertising to let people know that an event is licensed to sell liquor. If you are hosting or coordinating a special event where liquor will be served and you want to advertise your event, you must get approval from the Yukon Liquor Corporation before placing the ad or printing the tickets. Our licensing staff will be pleased to help you with the wording. Contact them by phone at 667- 5241 or fax or e-mail them at the numbers listed on the front of this pamphlet.
